Dr. Hartmann is a renowned thought leader and scholar-practitioner in education and leadership development. As the Founder and Chief Upstreamist of Upstream Leaders and a practicing school leader, he excels in nurturing others' capacities and challenging individuals and systems to think deeply for competitive success.
With extensive experience in secondary and post-secondary education, Dr. Hartmann has worked with top-tier schools in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. His career spans diverse cultural, geographic, and socioeconomic contexts. As a community leader, he addressed the opiate crisis by founding the Akron Chapter of Narcotics Overdose Prevention and Education (NOPE).
As a scholar, Dr. Hartmann critically analyzes educational systems and policies, focusing on Strategy-as-Practice in education, collective bargaining, organizational coherence, and strategic management. He contributes to leadership, education improvement, and individual growth through coaching, publications, and presentations. His expertise includes models from Harvard Business School, Harvard Graduate School of Education, Resilient Leadership, and John Hattie's Visible Learning.
Dr. Hartmann holds a bachelor's degree in secondary education from Slippery Rock University and a master's and doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh. He graduated from the Instructional Rounds Institute at Harvard Graduate School of Education and is a licensed superintendent and principal. Additionally, he has served for over 20 years in the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary/Civil Air Patrol, achieving the rank of major.
